Ice Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a relatively common problem that I see in the office. It usually will manifest as pain on the sole of the foot especially first thing in the morning on putting weight on the foot. Besides homeopathic treatment patients can do the following:

Icing is recommended after exercising, stretching, and strengthening, and at the end of the day after work. Try the following:

-For an ice massage, the patient freezes water in a small paper or foam cup and then rubs the ice over the plantar fascia using a circular motion and moderate pressure for 5 to 10 minutes.
-For an ice bath, the patient fills a shallow pan with water and ice and soaks the heel for 10-15 minutes. Keep your toes out or the ice water to prevent cold injuries
-For an ice pack, patients can put crushed ice in a plastic bag ( or use a bag of frozen vegetables) wrapped in a towel. The patient molds the ice pack to the foot and keeps it in place for 15-20 minutes
