Chemical’s Effect On the Unborn/Newborn

Since  starting the practice of medicine 30 years ago I have seen a dramatic rise in neurodevelopment disorders in children.   Current estimates are that 1 in 10 US children have ADHD, while 1 in 60 have autism spectrum disorder.  Intellectual disabilities which is harder to measure is also on the rise.

Noting this alarming increase in these disorders scientists, health professionals and parents are calling for increased  monitoring, assessment, and reduction of neurotoxic chemicals.     This group – dubbed Project TENDR- warns about prime examples of neurotoxic chemical.   The examples went beyond the usual suspects lead, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)

to also include organophosphate pesticides, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PDE) flame retardants, and combustion-related air pollutants.

There has been an explosion of knowledge in the past decade showing that quite a long list of commonly used chemicals are capable of causing neurodevelopmental damage to children, especially if the exposure occurs in utero or in the first few years after birth.

As a homeopath when I evaluate a child with autism and other neurodevelopmental  issues I have found that vaccines given and medications (including  over-the-counter medications) taken during pregnancy can have an adverse effect on the unborn.  Also, hormones taken to help with conception can pose a problem for the unborn child.

With 1,000 of untested chemicals being introduced each year parents need to be vigilant.  The bottom line is if you are pregnant or considering pregnancy avoid where possible all medications and eliminate the use of chemical in and around the home.

Should you have a child with autism or other developmental condition  it can often be treated and resolved with  the correct homeopathic treatment.
