#7 Revealed Secret of Health from the 12th Century

This entry is part 8 of 10 in the series Health Secrets From The 12th Century

While western medicine tends to focus on suppressing psychological diseases with medication, alternative modalities like homeopathy, acupuncture, Ayurveda and functional medicine can often provide a complete cure. In the second part of Maimonides’ seventh observation, he states:

“The physician…should seek to relieve him of the spiritual psychological force that causes anxiety. This is the first principle in curing any patient.”

Homeopathy has the power to heal long-standing anxiety. In turn, the physical complaints that stem from untreated anxiety can heal naturally. In my own medical practice, I have found homeopathy to be especially effective in relieving the “spiritual psychological force” that Maimonides refers to and have seen many first hand examples of why he believes it is vital to treat the psychological before the physical.

Janice was a 38-year old patient who had been suffering from depression and anxiety since childhood. She was consumed with anxiety when working on projects or thinking of her family’s financial situation and angered easily around her husband and daughter. Alongside her anxiety, Janice had a long list of other health problems, including easy bruising, chronic fatigue, daily headaches, constant canker sores, insomnia, nightmares, chronic vaginal discharge and dizziness. Janice had been on antidepressants in the past, but they had blunted her emotions and quality of life.

After considering her symptoms, I decided on phosphorus as a homeopathic remedy for her anxiety. After 6 weeks of treatment, Janice found that she was not worrying near as much as she had been before. Even though the financial situation had not changed, it did not weigh on her mind as heavily. Her headaches and canker sores disappeared. She no longer bruised easily, and her energy increased. Janice was also able to sleep through the night without waking from the nightmares that were invariably due to her previous subconscious state.

Dr. Bryan Walsh’s functional medicine approach is another invaluable tool I have used to treat anxiety when homeopathy’s results proved less than desirable. The Walsh approach involves balancing the patient’s copper, zinc, and ceruloplasmin levels. Most patients find that within three months, their anxiety is 80-90% improved.

Heather, a female in her early 30’s reported that she had always experienced some level of fear and anxiety, but after having children, these nagging feelings progressively worsened. She described consistently waking up abruptly in the early morning, mind racing. Then, she would start the day worried and overwhelmed. Heather truly believed that the world was not a safe place. Over the years, this constant state of anxiety resulted in excess fatigue, headaches, and weight gain.

I had a strong suspicion that Heather had a copper imbalance. After testing, I found that her free copper level was at 29%, nearly three times the optimal amount. Like Janice, many of Heather’s physical symptoms were cured after six weeks of treating her anxiety. Because her body was producing less cortisol triggered by stress, Heather reported that she had lost 25 pounds. She noticed improved energy levels, a substantial decrease in anxiety, and the ability to sleep through the night without waking. Her anger and impatience with others had lessened, and her morning nausea and headaches had improved.

There are many examples of how alternative medicine can cure Maimonides’ “spiritual psychological force that causes anxiety” and its associated illnesses.
